About

Catina Hancock

A parenting fieldguide to raising good humans.

Catina Hancock has spent more than thirty years in education, as a teacher, principal, and now a partner at a national education nonprofit, watching thousands of children grow into the adults they were becoming, and paying close attention to what actually helped. As a principal, she once refused to open a badly neglected school campus until it communicated safety and care in the way it looked and felt. That's the same conviction that runs through every principle in this book: kids rise to the environments and expectations we build around them. That campus went on to earn three state recognitions in a single year, one of only two schools in California to do so, but it's the thousands of individual kids she watched grow up along the way that actually shaped this book.

Her most important classroom has been her own kitchen table. Catina and her husband, Chris, raised two children, Davis and Holland, into the “good humans” this book is named for, and along the way, she distilled thirty years of watching kids grow up into the ten principles in these pages.

Catina lives in San Marcos, CA, and enjoys her dogs, exercising, and spending time with friends and family when she isn't working with schools or writing about the good humans she raised.

“Everything that helps a child thrive in a classroom starts long before they get there, at home, in the small moments no one grades.”
